Marianna Parnas Simpson, alto, graduated with a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting from St. Petersburg Conservatory, Russia. She founded the award-winning St. Petersburg Girls Choir, Kamerton, which she directed for ten years before coming to the United States. Since 1999 she has taught at Parker Elementary School, a Houston ISD elementary magnet school for music. Under the direction of Ms. Simpson, the choral program grew from 30 to 270 students. In 2002 the Parker Elementary music program received a National Grammy Award. The Parker Advanced Chorus was selected to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2003 and 2005, and at the national American Choral Directors Association Convention in 2007 in Miami, the second elementary school choir ever to be so honored. Parker Advanced Chorus will perform for the National Conference of Kodály Educators in Dallas in March 2010. Ms. Simpson was named a Teacher of the Year by her fellow teachers at Parker Elementary School in 2005. She has conducted numerous children’s chorus festivals and workshops. She is a founding member of the Houston Chamber Choir, and she directs the Treble Choir at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston. Ms. Simpson is Artistic Director of the summer program of the American Boy Choir in Princeton, New Jersey. In 2010 she will serve as choral director of the HISD Honor Choir.
