Mozart's Great Mass in C minor, K. 427
Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 7:30 pm
The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard, Houston, TX 77019
The Great Mass in C minor stands with the famous Requiem as two of the crowning achievements in Mozart's choral repertoire, and, like Requiem, it remained unfinished at the time of his death. As with other mass settings it contains Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Benedictus. However, the final part, Agnus Dei, is missing, and the Credo is incomplete. The piece was first performed on August 25, 1783 in St Peter's Church, Salzburg with Mozart's wife Constanze performing one of the soprano solo parts. Many speculate that Mozart wrote the mass in thanks to God following good events in his life, including his marriage to Constanze, the birth of their first child, and Constanze's recovery from illness.
This concert marks the Chamber Choir's first performance of Mozart's Great Mass in C minor, which is scored for double choir, soloists, and orchestra. To complete this celebration of Mozart and his flawless artistry, we have paired his beautiful Ave verum corpus with his great mass. It is sure to be a memorable end to a very successful season.
Tickets General $40, Seniors $36 (65+, advance purchase only,) Students $10 (Only available at the door.)
