Exultate Deo — The Glory of the Italian Renaissance Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart The Houston Chamber Choir takes you into the splendor of the Italian Renaissance with works by Palestrina, Gabrieli, Allegri, Anerio and Marenzio, many written especially for the Sistine Chapel. It is an honor for us to be the first to present a choral concert in the majestic Co-Cathedral for the Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston. Concert of Angels — El Día de los Muertos Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in collaboration with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra All Souls Day is observed on November 1 in many countries, but nowhere is it a more joyous life-affirming occasion than in Mexico. The Chamber Choir and the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra combine forces to bring Houston a special twist on this popular observance. You will come away convinced that the future has never sounded brighter. This year’s festival showcases The Women’s Chorale from Lamar High School, Houston, conducted by Gail Land and Scott Houston; Conroe’s Mitchell Intermediate School Honor Choir, led by Connie Horton; Kimberly Tobola’s Lanier Middle School Choir in Houston; as well as the Houston Chamber Choir. Admission is free and tickets are not required.
Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2009, at 3:30 p.m. St. Philip Presbyterian Church 2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death. In tribute, the Houston Chamber Choir, soloists and period instrumentalists present “Esther,” Handel’s first English oratorio. Tuneful and heroic, “Esther’s” immediate success signaled a new direction in Handel’s career that eventually led to his masterpiece, Messiah. SPECIAL EVENT Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. Stages Repertory Theater Yvonne Washington, Houston’s favorite chanteuse, will join the Choir in a program destined to raise the roof and lift your spirits as nothing else can. There will also be silent and live auctions featuring items that run the gamut from the luxurious to the esoteric. And we will be honoring longtime Houston Chamber Choir stalwarts Bernice and Pat Houstoun. Pat is the immediate past president of the board of directors. Supporting the Houston Chamber Choir has never made for such rousing fun. Please join us. After Bach Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. Cullen Theater, Wortham Theater Center Da Camera of Houston and the Houston Chamber Choir collaborate once again, this time to trace the influences of J. S. Bach into the 19th century. Franz Liszt’s “Via Crucis,” a late work scored for two pianos and chorus, will be featured along with a cappella settings by Felix Mendelssohn commemorating the 200th anniversary of his birth. Pre-concert talk by Robert Simpson at 7:00 p.m. on the sixth floor.
Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 3:30pm *VENUE CHANGE* Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church Continuing a tradition begun with Dave Brubeck and his quartet in 2006, the Houston Chamber Choir turns its talents to jazz. Ellington, like Brubeck, wrote sacred music throughout his career. The Chamber Choir and guest singers join forces with a stellar big band lead by Barrie Lee Hall, Ellington’s long-time trumpeter and pianist Paul English in this rare glimpse into sacred side of The Duke.
