ROBERT SIMPSON HONORED BY CHORUS AMERICA
Houston Chamber Choir founder and artistic director Robert Simpson has been selected to receive the 2010 Chorus America Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art. This international distinction will be awarded to Mr. Simpson in Atlanta, Georgia on June 18, 2010, during Chorus America’s annual conference. Past recipients include Robert Shaw, Roger Wagner, composer Ned Rorem, Alice Parker, Dale Warland, and Joseph Jennings, Music Director Emeritus of Chanticleer.
"The Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art recognizes a lifetime of significant contributions to the professional choral arts," says Chorus America president and CEO Ann Meier Baker. "Robert Simpson is richly deserving of this honor for his outstanding work with the Houston Chamber Choir. This award, first given to Chorus America’s founder Michael Korn, has a long list of distinguished winners, and it is a pleasure to add Robert's name to this list, shining a spotlight on his lifetime of achievement."
"I am thrilled to receive this recognition," Robert Simpson states. "But whatever contributions I have made to the professional choral arts are the result of my collaboration with the musicians of the Houston Chamber Choir. Their sustained artistry and the leadership of our Board of Directors have positioned the Houston Chamber Choir among the finest in the country. Without them, no amount of hard work on my part would have resulted in this award. It gives me great satisfaction to bring recognition to them, the City of Houston, as well as myself."
Chorus America established this award in 1978 to honor an individual with a lifetime of significant contributions to the professional choral art. Michael Korn, one of the founders of Chorus America and its first President (1977 to 1985), received the citation in 1986. Mr. Korn was artistic director and conductor of The Philadelphia Singers, which he founded in 1972; and also the associate conductor and chorus master of the Opera Company of Philadelphia. In 1991, in response to Mr. Korn's untimely death at the age of 44, this citation was renamed The Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art.
Described by Peter Phillips of the Tallis Scholars as "certainly one of this country’s leading ensembles," the Houston Chamber Choir has brought Houston audiences landmark concerts including the first period-instrument performance of Bach’s Mass in b minor and the return of jazz great Dave Brubeck and his quartet after a 20-year absence. Glowing reviews of its newest compact disc, "Ravishingly Russian," have appeared in the leading record guides including Gramophone (“Ravishing is right.”) and American Record Guide ("The singing is top-of-the-line.").
