Houston Chamber Choir Announces Upcoming Revolutionary Season!

HOUSTON, TX -- Houston Chamber Choir is pleased to announce its 22nd season, Revolutionary Sounds: Pioneers and Visionaries. Each concert will celebrate those who broke away from the ordinary and imagined something new. This season, the Chamber Choir performs with renowned pianist and Shepherd School of Music professor Brian Connelly, guest conductor Alexander Blachly, and special guest Jamie Bernstein, daughter of the late American treasure Leonard Bernstein.

“The coming season offers our musicians another chance to show off their range and versatility.  No two concerts are anything alike which we hope will delight our audiences as much as it delights us,” says Artistic Director Robert Simpson.

The Chamber Choir opens their ticketed season in September 2017, performing works by American musical trailblazers; from the loved folksongs of Stephen Foster, to works by the young Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Caroline Shaw.

Renowned pianist Brian Connelly joins them for their next concert in November, featuring works by Brahms and Barber, musical purists of their time, playing a 19th-century Bösendorfer piano.

Christmas at the Villa is back again in December, a favorite holiday tradition in Houston, with an additional concert this season due to high demand.

Alexander Blachly guest conducts the first concert of the new year in February 2018; exposing gamesmanship, eloquence, and surprise in the Renaissance. Blachly is the world’s leading authority on early Renaissance music.

The Chamber Choir performs the heartbreaking and powerful Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion, written by contemporary composer David Lang in April 2018.

The 22nd season closes in May with an incredible celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, with special guest Jamie Bernstein. Her father’s genius will be on display in this concert, including highlights from West Side Story and sacred music including “Chichester Psalms.”

There are a number of free concerts for the Houston community this upcoming season. The Houston Chamber Choir performs at South Main Baptist’s Gala in September, marking the opening of their renovated sanctuary. They will show off their versatility performing the best of the American Broadway musical at Miller Outdoor Theatre in October. Finally, the Choral Invitational Festival Hear the Future is back for the 19th year, with three exceptional elementary, middle, and high school choirs from the Houston area to perform in concert with the Houston Chamber Choir in January 2018.

“The whole choir looks forward to Hear the Future each year,” says Executive Director Aileen Roberts. “There are an unbelievable number of talented choral directors working in education in our region, and hearing their students sing at such high-quality levels is inspiring.”

The Houston Chamber Choir is a professional ensemble of 26 singers who have trained at the best conservatories and music schools around the world. In 2015, the Chamber Choir received The American Prize for best choral performance in the country and its Artistic Director Robert Simpson received the award in the conducting category. The Chamber Choir recently finished recording their fifth CD, The Complete Choral Works of Maurice Duruflé, with organist Ken Cowan in June 2017.
