Encore Houston, Episode 11: Houston Chamber Choir

Join us for an all-Duruflé affair on this episode of Encore Houston, featuring the Houston Chamber Choir! Though he lived a long 84 years and began composing in his teens, Maurice Duruflé was not a prolific composer. He was incredibly diligent with his work, and was selective about what he published. Because of this, he only has four works for chorus, all of which fit nicely into an evening concert by the chamber choir, with Rice organist Ken Cowan joining for the Messe, “Cum Jubilo” and Requiem. Given the traditions surrounding the mass and choral church music, it is fitting that the works on this concert take inspiration from the modal tunes of Medieval and Renaissance-era sacred music, particularly in the Four Motets on Gregorian Themes.
