Very Artsy News: Artist Opportunities, Youth Choir and more

AS COVID CASES CONTINUE TO SURGE across the nation, we’re keeping a close eye out for event cancellations and postponements. Last week, RodeoHouston announced the lineup for this year’s event and it’s jam-packed with some of the city’s finest musical talents. Is taking an art class on your resolution list? If so, the Glassell School’s Spring 2022 classes kick off later this month. Here’s more art news for your week: 

America’s Favorite Dance Company Returns to Houston 

Just in time for Black History Month, the Society for the Performing Arts is welcoming the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre back to the Bayou City for a weekend of performances. From February 18-19, the renowned dance troop, led by Artistic Director Robert Battle, will present Revelations (1960). Performances will take place at Jones Hall, tickets start at $40. 

Houston Chamber Choir Hear the Future Festival 

This month marks the 22nd annual Hear the Future festival, the Houston Chamber Choir’s youth choral invitational. Three schools in the Greater Houston area are invited to participate. With an emphasis on K-12 programs, this year’s festival will include performances by student choirs from Parker Elementary School, North Shore Middle School and Cy-Fair High School, along with a special performance by the Grammy Award-winning Houston Chamber Choir. The free performance will be hosted in the sanctuary of South Main Baptist Church on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m.

Fresh Arts Artist INC Program 2022

Since 2017, Fresh Arts has worked to equip artists of all disciplines with the resources to sustain their practices. The Artist INC program welcomes up to 25 participants over the course of eight weeks for a series of artist-peer-led workshops, multimedia lectures and group activities. Participants are selected based on their submissions, readiness and cohort diversity. Applications are due Friday at 5 p.m.

MOCA Seeks Artists for New Public Art Installations 

The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs is seeking submissions for a mural and sculpture project to live at the North Belt Public Safety Complex, a 31,000-square-foot hub for the Houston Police and Fire Departments. The project’s budget is $430,000 for both artworks, one to live on the exterior and a mural on the interior of the new building. Artists and collectives working in Texas are encouraged to apply. Applications are due by Feb. 14 at 11:59 pm.
